Because income from discontinued operations is listed separately on the income statement, investors are less likely to be misled as to the source of a company's profit. This is especially useful when companies merge, since parsing out which assets are being divested or folded up gives a clearer picture of how a company will make money in the future.

This was by far and away the most difficult course in my college career and it was not enjoyable. However, I learned SO much-so that's kind of the point right?
This textbook is ginormous, expensive, and not terribly intuitive. And almost worthless without the companion study guide (An additional $40). I hate it when they have 100 problems in the end of the chapter to practice and no resource to know if you got them right or not.
I only got through chapter 13 this semester.. I finish it next sem..more

You know, for a textbook [about accounting no less], I thought this was pretty good. If you're the type of person who can learn a lot just by reading, you're going to have a grand ol' time with this. The examples are good. The example problems are helpful. There is a lot of real life mixed in so it's not just a bunch of theory.
That said, I'm glad to get it out of my backpack and off my bookshelf.

well, this book was a nightmare to me as a student,
it's too heavy so i didnt bring it on every intermediate accounting class which was for a year,
but.after a year or so.now i realize that this book teach me so much than i thought back then,
this is a must have book for any accounting students who works in any accounting-involved work.
even though they will publish a newer edition but at least you have to have one.

I laughed. I cried. It was an emotional journey to get through this book..what more could an avid reader want from a book? I can't give it 5 stars though. The sheer magnitude of the subject prevents any book from presenting it with perfection.
My favorite line from the book is the last line of the last chapter (before the appendix to the chapter). It is a quote from Aristotle. 'The correct beginning is more than half the whole' (pg. 1520).

I just love accounting lol. this book was so helpful and currently i am going to read the second version.
I can't say this textbook was fun but I definitely learned from it. However, I often discovered mistakes either in the text or in the online text and supplemental materials. I wish they'd make sure the text is correct instead of rushing to release new versions. I know certain chapters need to be updated when regulations change, but it's like no one proofreads the book!
Good

Wow, I can't believe that I finally got through 2 entire accounting textbooks. I don't exactly know if these are the best texts, but they are the ones that my University uses, so I was happy to learn about accounting. I had some great instructors, but I am glad to be done. Sometimes the examples given would be very simplistic and then the problems would be very involved and I would have to use outside resources to get the solution figured out, but all in all the resources were more than adequate..more
This was my textbook for UCLA accouting program. I liked the depth and examples, but it seems like the only reason they do new editions is to charge more ($200+) for the same book with a few of the problems slightly altered to form new solutions, and a lot of small notes about how iGaap is different than Gaap.

I enjoy the majority of the books I read, but this is a terrible textbook. I was shocked because the Principles of Accounting textbook by the same author is excellent. However, this textbook is light on the examples. Sometimes reading the chapters and following the examples does not help you on the homework or quizzes.

This is the best accounting book I've ever read (if good for reading accounting books truly exist). The turmoil in the financial markets has prompted me to do some reviews of how things are accounted for.
What can I say? This is a textbook. I spent A LOT of time with this book preparing for the FAR on the CPA test. This is a pretty good overview. Misses some depth for some important subjects like consolidations.
Well. As an accountant wanna be, how could you say this book? Currently Reading is the exactly choice. I don't think so that I have already finished every single part of chapter in this book. But till the end of life in learning Accounting, I realized that I am reading this boook (always)

I think this book is a great resource, I am shelving it in our office library instead of selling it back.
However, after having spent 2 semesters lugging it around (8 and a half pounds!), I fervently hope not to open it again anytime soon.

Bring on the final; this book was straightforward, as one would prefer their accounting text to be. Used for Intermediate I and II made the big sticker price easier to handle.
This thing weighs more than a baby!
Best, most comprehensive, intermediate book on the market. This book will carry you throughout your career. Don't sell it back. Ever.

Overly complex on some topics that should have been simple, but overall a decent text. Monstrously heavy though.
I read a 1980's edition. Just my poor attempt at humor!
Thorough coverage of the topic :) Becarefull of chapter 20 on pensions - theres an updated version online.
Excellent read..if you want to learn Accounting. Too many pages though
